It began as a way of marking emphasis in political and activist posts on Twitter around 2016 and spread from there into general internet humour, where it is now used more often as a joke about emphasis than as actual emphasis.

How to Use the Clap Text Generator

When to Use Something Else

Because clap text is now strongly associated with a particular tone, it can read as mocking even when you mean it sincerely — which is worth knowing before using it in a disagreement. It is also poor for accessibility: a screen reader announces the emoji name between every word, turning a short sentence into a long one.
