Clap Text Generator 👏 — Add Emoji Between Words

A clap text generator puts an emoji between every word, mimicking someone clapping on each syllable to hammer a point home. The convention spread on Twitter around 2016 from communities where clapping between words was already an established device in speech.

How it reads, and when it backfires

Three registers, and the formatting does not distinguish them. **Emphatic** is the original use. **Exasperated** is explaining something the writer thinks should be obvious, and it carries an edge. **Ironic** is parody of the second, which is where most current use sits.

Because it is associated with lecturing, it reads as condescending in a disagreement even when that was not the intent. It also roughly doubles your character count, so a long sentence becomes a wall people scroll past. Three to six words is the range that works.

The accessibility cost

A screen reader announces the emoji name between every word, so "say it louder" becomes "say clapping hands sign it clapping hands sign louder". A short sentence becomes long and a long one becomes unusable.

It moved into general use quickly and then into ironic use, which is roughly where it sits now — most clap text posted today is a joke about emphasis rather than emphasis itself.
